Current Obsession Wednesday: Legion (TV Show)
I’m obsessed with the TV show Legion.
If you are a film geek you MUST watch Legion. If you are not a film geek but love TV with high production value, or compelling characters, or suspenseful storylines, or badass ladies, or superheroes, or 1960’s inspired costume and set designs (and makeup!), or comedy, romance, fantasy, psychological thrillers…I could go on, obviously.
Legion stars that guy from Downton Abbey (Dan Stevens), a blonde woman who doesn’t like to be touched (Rachel Keller), and a bunch of other people I really like. But there are two who really steal the show. First, Jermain Clement from Flight of the Concords who plays a man who lives in an ice cube on the astral plane, wears an antique scuba diving suit for protection, and recites beat poetry unprompted. Second, Aubrey Plaza from Community is a strange woman who is sometimes a hallucination of the main character. She uses her entire body to perform in this role, the way she emotes with simply her face speaks to her talent as an actress. Personally I am rooting for whatever storyline keeps her on the show the longest. I cannot get enough of her, or her James Bond intro inspired dance sequence.—It makes sense in context, I promise.
Marvel and FX have partnered to bring us an X-Men prequel…spin off…sequel…? I have no idea when or where this is supposed to take place, and I like X-Men but I am by no means knowledgeable on that universe. Anyway, if Wes Anderson and Stanley Kubrick had an X-Men TV show lovechild, this would no doubt be the result.
