When Dimple Met Rishi (Book)
What- a YA book about an Indian girl who never wanted to live the traditional life her parents want for her, and an Indian boy who is willing to sacrifice everything to make his family happy. Their parents are old friends, and decide that the two of them would make the perfect couple. And all of this is set at a summer program for coders.
Why- I freaking love these characters! Dimple is a forking badass. She had spent her entire life has a bookish, coding goddess, feminist who has to struggle with having a mom that only wants her to look pretty and find a husband. This girl fights it everyday because she can’t help being herself.
And Rishi. Rishi, Rishi, Rishi. This little sweety does everything he can to be the perfect eldest son. He loves his parents, he loves his culture, and he will do everything he can live up to their expectations. But he isn’t spineless. Not at all. He stands up for what he believes in, he fights cultural microaggressions with micro-resistance. Oh my Gods this boy is just the sweetest little peach, I want to protect him from the world.
These two characters fit together like puzzle pieces, but sometimes it is difficult to see how right things are when you are in the middle of it.
