Current Obsession Wednesday: Doctor Who Season 11 (Show)
What: Doctor Who can be a little difficult to explain to outsiders without it sounding ridiculous. But allons-y. So basically there is a race of aliens called Time Lords, we look like them, but they have two hearts, regenerate, live a crazy long time, have bigger brains and are crazy advanced. The Doctor is kind of a rebel. They stole a TARDIS (time machine/spaceship), broke the chameleon circuit (the thing that makes it blend in, hence the police box) and travels all of time and space saving people. The doctor is a little different with every regeneration, but usually they are a know-it-all, stubborn, rebel, and not someone you want to fork with. Season 11 in the first time in 50+ years (actual Earth years) that the doctor has regenerated into a woman
Why: Doctor Who has always been a show about education, understanding, and equality. The Doctor travels around the entire universe saving everyone and just trying to get people to stop killing each other. They say things like “In 900 years of time and space, I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important,” and they honestly live by that.
Why should you start watching now? Well not to keep repeating myself, but the doctor is a woman and that is kind of perfect. The doctor has always been outspoken, sassy, rebellious, and not someone fork with. When the doctor is a man that is all fun and wonderful, but also it has become a little dull. Some powerful white guy walks into a room and says “listen up, I’m in charge now” most people are going to eventually, and easily, fall in line. But a women (yes white, but still) telling everyone, even the men in charge, to shut up and listen, is more powerful. In the third episode the doctor meets a new enemy. This guy doesn’t know who the doctor is and tries to intimidate her, and she responds by saying “you really don’t want to threaten me.” As the audience we are all like “yeah this bitch is like thousands of years old now and she has forked up a lot of people, you don’t want to mess with her.” but this guy just sees a small spunky girl.
Basically I’m in love and super excited and I would love it if everyone watched it and then talked to me about how excited they are.
Why Now: Right now is the perfect time to jump into the show if you have never seen it before. Not only is the doctor a woman, which is totally badass, but also there is a new show runner (who is the first female Doctor Who show runner too!) which means everything is new. You can pick it up and not get lost, so enjoy.
